Register to Vote

You can register to vote in local, state, and federal elections in New Hampshire if you are:

• A United States citizen;
• At least 18 years old on election day;
• A resident in the town/city ward you seek to register in.  There is no minimum period you are required to have lived in your community before registering.

To register to vote, you will be required to complete a Voter Registration Form provided by your local town/city clerk or supervisor of the checklist.  You will also need to provide proof of your identity, age, U.S. citizenship and domicile (primary residence address).

You can register as a Democrat, Republican, or Undeclared voter.

Registering to Vote at the Town/City Clerk’s Office or Supervisors of the Checklist Meeting

You can register to vote up to 6-13 days before an election at the local town clerk’s office or at a public and scheduled session of your local supervisors of the checklist.

To register to vote in local, state, and federal elections in New Hampshire, you must be:

• A United States citizen;

• A resident in the town/city ward you seek to register in. There is no minimum period you are required to have lived in your community before registering.

Registering at the town/city clerk’s office

You can register to vote up to 6-13 days before the election at your local town or city clerk’s office. You can find your clerk’s contact information and hours at https://middletonnh.gov/pages/departments#clerk  

You will be required to show the clerk proof of your identity, age, U.S. citizenship and domicile (primary residence address). You will also be asked to fill out a voter registration form.  

Registering at a local supervisors of the checklist meeting

Alternatively, you can register to vote at a scheduled and public session of your local supervisors of the checklist meeting. They are required by law to meet 6 to 13 days before the election. Reach out to your local town hall for specific deadlines.

You will be required to show the supervisors proof of your identity, age, U.S. citizenship, and domicile (primary residence address). You will also be asked to fill out a voter registration form.

At the Polls on Election Day

New Hampshire offers election day registration. If you miss the deadline to register to vote before the election, you can register at the polls on election day. 

You can register to vote in local, state, and federal elections in New Hampshire if you are:

• A United States citizen;
• At least 18 years old on election day;
• A resident in the town/city ward you seek to register in. There is no minimum period you are required to have lived in your community before registering.

Election day registration 

To register to vote at your polling location on election day, you will be required to show the supervisor of the checklist proof of your identity, age, U.S. citizenship and domicile (primary residence address). You will also be asked to fill out a Voter Registration form.

Absentee Voter Registration

If you meet the state’s requirements and qualifications and are unable to register in person, you may register absentee.

You can register to vote in local, state, and federal elections in New Hampshire if you are:

• A United States citizen;
• At least 18 years old on election day;
• A resident in the town/city ward you seek to register in. There is no minimum period you are required to have lived in your community before registering.

You may register to vote by absentee (by mail) if one of the following is true:

• You will be absent from the town or city on the dates/times when the Supervisors of the Checklist meet to receive voter registration applications;

  • Absence includes an employment obligation that prevents you from attending a session of the Supervisors. The term “employment” includes the care of children and infirm adults, with or without compensation.

• You are unable to register in person due to a physical disability; or

• You are confined to a penal institution for a misdemeanor or while awaiting trial but otherwise qualified.

How to register to vote by absentee

If you qualify to register to vote by absentee, you should request the applicable absentee voter registration affidavit and voter registration form from your town or city clerk. You can find contact information for your local clerk using the New Hampshire Voter Information Lookup.

Effective September 30, 2025, absentee registrants shall provide proof of U.S. citizenship and age in addition to domicile and identity. For more details on qualifications to register to vote in New Hampshire, check out Registering to Vote in New Hampshire .

If the election official receiving the application confirms through the centralized voter registration database required by RSA 654:45 or other official records that the applicant was previously or is currently registered to vote in New Hampshire, the applicant shall prove identity and domicile, but shall not be required to prove his or her age or citizenship.

The absentee voter registration affidavit must be witnessed. Both the affidavit and the voter registration form, as well as proof of New Hampshire voter qualifications, are to be returned to your town or city clerk.

Supervisors of the Checklist must review and approve your application. You are registered to vote when the supervisors approve the application. Supervisors of the checklist are required to meet on a date 6 to 13 days before the election and then on election day at the polls to correct the voter checklist. If you return your absentee voter registration forms before the meeting scheduled 6 to 13 days ahead of the election, your application will be reviewed at that meeting. If you return your registration after that meeting and by the absentee deadlines, your application will be reviewed on election day.

Uniformed & Overseas (UOCAVA) Voters
